Probably one of the best weekend escapes in Northern Taiwan, Jianshi County in the mountains of Hsinchu is home to impressive gorges, accessible wild river hot springs, and several tribes of Atayal indigenous peoples. Two days is enough time to enjoy a non-hurried experience. After driving to Yulao lookout for lunch at 1500m in elevation, we will then descend into Xiuluan Valley where we will first camp at an elevation of around 900m. The next morning we will hike through a serene bamboo forest to one of Taiwan’s most beautiful and welcoming wild hot spring outcrops. After we have relaxed to the point our muscles are ready, we will hike back and drive down back to Taipei, optionally choosing an alternate route and passing through Fuxing Country in Taiyuan to view some additional waterfalls.
